RIP Cristo Rey Jesuit founder

Founding President of Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston, Father TJ Martinez, has passed away Friday after a battle with advanced stomach cancer.

Martinez passionately believed that education was the key to changing the lives of young people living in under-served communities.

So in 2009 he tackled a new mission and founded Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston. Students saw Father Martinez as their foundation.

In April, when it was announced he'd been battling advanced stomach cancer, they gathered at the school to pray. Parents and alumni joined them.

After fighting courageously for seven months, Martinez, who was 44, lost his battle to cancer.

Martinez oversaw the school's growth from a student population of 80 to nearly 500, and graduated two senior classes in which all have been accepted into college, the school said.

A wake and visitation for Father TJ will be held Monday, Dec. 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cristo Rey Jesuit. His funeral will be held Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

Thanksgiving and Gratitude

Thanksgiving is not all about turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. The name of the holiday conveys what the day is supposed to be about. Given that our overly-schedule lives often make it difficult to spend time reflecting on simple pleasures, here are some quotes on thanks, thanksgiving, and gratitude to help get your Thanksgiving holiday off to a good start.

Outback Steakhouse Dinner

After a very wet and rainy day at the Art Crawl, we headed to Outback for an early dinner.

We started off with Regular Salad and French Onion Soup.

Then had five ounces Sirloin & Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie and six ounces Fillet and Steamed Lobster Tail.

So Yummy!

Art Crawl

Since 1992, the tradition of the artists "open studios" takes place on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Visitors have the opportunity to pARTicipate in the live/work/show spaces of these neighborhood"urban pioneers."  The mission of the ARTCRAWL is to assist the public in understanding contemporary art by directly involving the visitors in a dialogue with local artists in the Artist Warehouse District.

Happy Veterans Day!

I would like to thank all of our Veterans for their service to our great country. Our Veterans courage and sacrifice is the only reason we can live the awesome life that we live today, and we THANK YOU

If you thank a veteran, consider thanking them not only for the time they served, but for what they may still endure today. And when it comes to how we treat our veterans, let’s all try to do a little better. They deserve it.

Nik Wallenda blindly conquers Chicago high wire

Nik Wallenda walks 93 feet across tightrope 558 feet above ground while blindfolded after walking 200 yards from one skyscraper to another in Windy City.

One walk was 200 yards long with an incredible 19-degree incline. The other was shorter—93 feet—but he did it blindfolded, and he did both as millions of viewers watched in breath-taking amazement on Discovery Channel and online.

An official from Guinness World Records was on hand to certify Wallenda’s feats as world records—highest incline tightrope walk at 670.73 feet and the highest blindfolded tightrope walk at 557.89 feet.

A seemingly calm Wallenda made the first walk from the 588-foot West Marina Tower to the 671-foot Leo Burnett Building over the Chicago River look easy, carrying on a casual conservation with his father and those associated with the event during the near 7-minute walk.
