RIP Cristo Rey Jesuit founder

Founding President of Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston, Father TJ Martinez, has passed away Friday after a battle with advanced stomach cancer.

Martinez passionately believed that education was the key to changing the lives of young people living in under-served communities.

So in 2009 he tackled a new mission and founded Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston. Students saw Father Martinez as their foundation.

In April, when it was announced he'd been battling advanced stomach cancer, they gathered at the school to pray. Parents and alumni joined them.

After fighting courageously for seven months, Martinez, who was 44, lost his battle to cancer.

Martinez oversaw the school's growth from a student population of 80 to nearly 500, and graduated two senior classes in which all have been accepted into college, the school said.

A wake and visitation for Father TJ will be held Monday, Dec. 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cristo Rey Jesuit. His funeral will be held Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
